Young brothers sandwich the win for Freedom High School wrestling team

The Liberty High School wrestling team gave all it had but it wasn’t enough to overtake Freedom on Saturday night at Joseph McIntyre Gym. In an intense dual meet Freedom relied on the Young brothers,Josh and Jake, to get the 34-25 Lehigh Valley Conference victory.

“Start with a Young and end with a Young,” Jake said after he preserved the victory for the Patriots.

After Tyler Galasso’s 9-1 major decision gave Freedom back the lead and Cody Gonzalez’s 8-4 win extended it, Jake Young took the mat against Malik Lovell with the dual meet victory at his fingertips. After a scoreless first period, Jake started on bottom and gained an early escape and takedown. Lovell answered with an escape of his own before Jake  managed to get another takedown making the score 5-1 going into the final period.

“Once I scored the first takedown all my nervousness went away,” Jake said.“After that I just did what I had to do to get the win.”

With the dual meet victory getting closer, Jake stayed aggressive with a headlock attempt on the edge of the mat that resulted in no points. Lovell answered with a throw attempt of his own that was countered resulting in the final takedown to give him the 7-2 victory.

“I knew that he was strong so I was going to have to make sure to stay in good position to score points and that’s what I kept reminding myself the whole match,” Jake said. “But it feels good to get this victory for the team.”

The match started at 160 where Josh Young, the older of the brothers, got the momentum started for Freedom by collecting a 12-8 major decision over Rich Ruiz. But things for Josh weren’t as easy as they were for his little brother. In the second period Ruiz hit with a lateral drop on the edge of the mat to take the 5-2. But Josh quickly regrouped,  scoring an escape and a takedown to cut the lead to 6-5.

“I wasn’t worried when I found out that I was starting the match,” Josh Young said.“Knowing that I am the first match just means that I have to get ready earlier, besides that I just go out and do what I have to do; it’s that simple.”

After getting thrown to his back, Josh only gave up two points and collected seven more of his own to get the win.

“It makes me happy to know that me and my brother got the wins to start and end this match,” Josh said. “I have just as much confidence in my brother as I have in myself so I knew that if it came down to it that we would get the win.”

After Josh Young’s victory to start the match, Freedom won the next six matches for a 25-0 lead. Of those six victories, they managed to collect bonus points at 182 pounds from John Callahan, followed by a pin at 195 from Francisco Santiago, and a fall from Tyler Peerson at 285 with less than a second left in the first period.

Liberty’s Kevin Dans finally put points on the scoreboard for the Hurricanes by pinning Omar El Sayed in 31 seconds. The Hurricanes’ string of victories ended after Devon Lotito’s 1:42 fall at 132 over Adam Evans which put Liberty in the lead 25-24 due to Freedom losing a on a controversial call in the previous bout.

But the major decision by Galasso at 138 followed by Gonzalez’s win at 145 gave Freedom the lead that was finally clinched by Jake Young.

“I am extremely proud of my guys tonight,” Freedom coach Brandon Hall said.“When we wrestle Liberty it’s always a great match and I wouldn’t want it any other way. We had some guys really step up tonight and get big wins for us and that’s what made the difference.”
